Reading is one of the most important skills you need to succeed in the world. The earlier you start, the better. And the best way to get your child interested in reading, is by introducing them to books from when they are born.
Here are some ideas to get you started
- Get them excited about stories by telling them stories. This is a great way to bond with your child plus it will improve their vocabulary.
- Encourage your child to come up with their own stories and to tell them to you. This improves their imagination, vocabulary and confidence.
- Read to your child as often as possible. And definitely make a storytime part of your bedtime routine.
- Make it fun – use funny voices wen you read stories and point out all the different things on the pictures.
- Join your local public library. It’s free and you’ll have access to all the books you need.
- Make a poster for their room with the alphabet in lower case. Seeing the letters every day, will help your child later when they actually start learning to read.
- When you are travelling, point out letters and words on buildings and signs. Encourage them to also spot letters and words.
- Give them old magazines, newspapers and junkmail and a pair of child-friendly scissors. Let them cut out words and letters and stick them on a piece of paper.
- Download reading games or apps on your phone and let your child play with this while you travel.
