How do you keep your winter boots in top condition? Follow these tips to ensure they look as good as new for years to come.
Keeping them clean
It’s never a good idea to soak any type of boots in water. Rather try the following:
- For velour or suede, placing your boots in water will affect the colour and texture. Instead, to remove everyday dirt and dust, use a soft bristle brush or old, clean toothbrush and gently stroke the fabric of the boots.
- To prolong the life span of your boots even further, buy a protective sealant or Scotchguard.
- To clean your patent leather, just use a damp cloth to get rid of any surface dirt. If you find any scuff marks, apply a small amount of Vaseline onto the mark to smooth it out. Finish off with patent leather spray.
- Don’t ever wash boots in the washing machine. Even the most sensitive cycle can pull the glue apart.
To dry them
- Always just air dry your boots if they are wet, to ensure they keep their shape. Using any other type of heat source could stretch them.
- If your boots do get wet from being in the rain, ball up some old newspapers and stuff them into your boots. This will absorb the water and retain the shape.
Treating spills and stains
- For wet stains, gently pat the affected area with a clean cloth and apply talcum powder or cornflour to the area. Let it rest overnight, then gently brush off the powder the following day.
- For dry stains, gently wipe the stain with a warm, damp cloth. Mix two parts of cold water and one part white vinegar and apply to the stain, gently scrubbing. Ball up some newspaper and place in inside the boot. To dry, place the boots in an airy space away from direct heat and sunlight.
