As much as wigs are amazing, it’s important that you look after your natural hair too.
Natural hair
Keep it clean
The first step is to ensure your hair is clean to avoid a sweaty scalp or product build up in your hair because wigs can harbour bacteria that can lead to a dry and flaky scalp.
Braiding
You can also braid your hair underneath the wig to prevent matting. You can either braid in cornrows or small twists, this allows for hair to be protected and for easier access to the scalp when cleansing and moisturising.
Moisturise
Amla Oil is great for hair growth. Apply directly to the scalp once a day.
Wig care
Synthetic wigs don’t last as long as human-hair wigs but there are wig-care tips that will help extend the life of your synthetic wig.
Pre-wash
Before you wash the wig gently brush it with a wig comb/brush to remove any tangles. Also ensure that you don’t pull or drag the fibre.
Wash
Avoid using hot water for your synthetic hair as heat damages fibres, use cold water and mix it with wig shampoo. Instead of rubbing it run your fingers over the inside of the cap to remove any oils and sweat. After washing it, allow it to soak for about 5 minutes and then rinse it with cold running water.
Condition
Apply conditioner directly to your wig; carefully work the conditioner through the hair, avoiding the cap. Leave in for four to five minutes.
Towel dry
Place the wig between a folded towel and pat dry. Avoid squeezing or rubbing the wig while drying. Once dry, gently shake the wig to regain its style. Never use a hair dryer, as heat damages synthetic fibres.
Styling tools
When it comes to synthetic hair the most essential styling tools are your fingertips and a spray bottle of cold water. Also use only combs and brushes that are designed for wigs because regular hairbrushes can damage your wig.
