With patience and practice you can teach your child to tie his or her shoelaces. So when is the right time? It is recommended to teach your child when they’re between five and six year old.
Here is our guide to make the learning process a little easier:
The easy bunny ears method
- Step 1: Place the shoe on a flat surface. Lay each lace on its side. Take both laces and tie one lace over the other and then pull them tight. You will now have a knot in the middle of the shoe.
- Step 2: Hold one lace between your thumb and your first two fingers and make a loop (bunny ears).
- Step 3: Use the same method to make a loop with the other lace.
- Step 4: Tie one loop over the other and then pull them tight.
Tips
- Use soft shoelaces when teaching your child.
- Colour in one side or one edge of the shoelace to help your child distinguish the different sides. In our pictorial we wrapped a bit of colourful tape on the one end.
